Generative Fill: A revolutionary feature that lets you create, add, or remove content from images with text prompts

Generative fill is a feature in Photoshop AI Beta that enables you to add, extend, or remove content from your images non-destructively using simple text prompts. You can achieve realistic results that will surprise, delight, and astound you in seconds. With generative fill, you can:

  • Generate objects: Select an area in your image, then describe what youd like to add/replace through a text prompt.

  • Generate backgrounds: Select the background behind your subject, then generate a new scene from a text prompt.

  • Extend images: Extend the canvas of your image, then make a selection of the empty region. Generating without a prompt will create a harmonious extension of your scene. Generating with a prompt will add content to your image while extending the rest of your scene.

  • Remove objects: Select the object you want to remove, then generate without a prompt to let the generative AI technology make it disappear.

Generative fill is incredibly versatile. You can experiment with off-the-wall ideas, ideate around different concepts, and produce dozens of variations in a snap.

How to Use Generative Fill in Photoshop AI Beta

Generate objects: Select an area and describe what you want to add or replace

If you want to add a new object to your image or replace an existing one, you can use generative fill to generate it with a text prompt. For example, you can add a dog to your image by following these steps:

  • Select the Lasso tool from the toolbar and draw a rough selection around the area where you want to add the dog.

  • Select the Generative Fill button from the contextual taskbar that appears at the top of the screen. You can also access generative fill from Edit > Generative Fill or by right-clicking on the selection and choosing Generative Fill.

  • In the text-entry prompt box that appears, type "a dog" and press Enter.

  • Wait for a few seconds as Photoshop AI Beta generates a dog image that matches your selection and blends with your background.

  • You can adjust the generated dog image on a new layer using any Photoshop tool, such as Move, Transform, Eraser, etc.

You can also replace an existing object with a different one by using generative fill. For example, you can replace a car with a bike by following these steps:

  • Select the Object Selection tool from the toolbar and drag a rectangle around the car you want to replace.

  • Select the Generative Fill button from the contextual taskbar that appears at the top of the screen. You can also access generative fill from Edit > Generative Fill or by right-clicking on the selection and choosing Generative Fill.

  • In the text-entry prompt box that appears, type "a bike" and press Enter.

  • Wait for a few seconds as Photoshop AI Beta generates a bike image that replaces the car and blends with your background.

  • You can adjust the generated bike image on a new layer using any Photoshop tool, such as Move, Transform, Eraser, etc.

Generate backgrounds: Select the background and generate a new scene

If you want to change the background of your image or create a new scene behind your subject, you can use generative fill to generate it with a text prompt. For example, you can change the background of a portrait photo from a studio to a beach by following these steps:

  • Select the Quick Selection tool from the toolbar and drag over your subject to select it. You can refine your selection using Select > Select and Mask.

  • Invert your selection by choosing Select > Inverse or pressing Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows) or Command+Shift+I (Mac).

  • Select the Generative Fill button from the contextual taskbar that appears at the top of the screen. You can also access generative fill from Edit > Generative Fill or by right-clicking on the selection and choosing Generative Fill.

  • In the text-entry prompt box that appears, type "a beach" and press Enter.

  • Wait for a few seconds as Photoshop AI Beta generates a beach scene that replaces the studio background and blends with your subject.

  • You can adjust the generated background image on a new layer using any Photoshop tool, such as Move, Transform, Eraser, etc.
